Social Studies

The Social Studies program is designed to cultivate the knowledge, critical thinking skills, and attitudes necessary for students to become responsible, active, and informed citizens in a diverse and complex world. It aims to develop a comprehensive understanding of human societies, cultures, and global interdependence. The program's overarching vision is to enable students to make informed and ethical choices that contribute to the public good.

Social Studies/Études Sociales 10-1 (5 credits)

Recommended Prerequisite: 60% in Social Studies 9

Recommended French Prerequisite: 60% in Études Sociales 9 and registration in FLA 10

Social Studies 10-1 focuses on developing students’ understanding of political, economic, and social systems in Canada and the world, with an emphasis on critical thinking, analysis, and citizenship for post-secondary readiness. Students learn to examine issues, interpret information, and make informed, evidence-based decisions. Social Studies 10-1 emphasizes academic analysis, critical thinking, and post-secondary preparation.

Social Studies/Études Sociales 10-2 (5 credits)

Recommended Prerequisite:  40% - 60% in Social Studies 9 or 65% in KAE Social 9

Social Studies 10-2 emphasizes practical understanding of political, economic, and social systems, focusing on skills for informed citizenship and participation in everyday life and the workplace. Students apply concepts to real-world situations and develop problem-solving and decision-making skills. Social Studies 10-2 emphasizes practical citizenship, real-world application, and everyday decision-making.


Social Studies/Études Sociales 20-1 (5 credits)

Recommended Prerequisite: 60% in Social Studies 10-1

Recommended French Prerequisite: 60% in Études Sociales 10-1 and registration in FLA 20

Social Studies 20-1 builds on 10-1 skills, focusing on developing students’ understanding of Canadian and global political, economic, and social systems with an emphasis on critical thinking, analysis, and informed decision-making. The course prepares students for senior high academic studies and post-secondary education by exploring complex contemporary and historical issues.

Social Studies 20-2/Études Sociales 20-2 (5 credits)

Prerequisite:  50% in Social Studies 10-2 or 40% in Social 10-1

French Prerequisite: 50% in Études Sociales 10-2 or 40% in Études Sociales 10-1

Social Studies 20-2 builds on 10-2 skills, emphasizing practical understanding of political, economic, and social systems, and applying knowledge to real-world issues, workplace scenarios, and everyday life. The course develops problem-solving, decision-making, and citizenship skills through relevant, practical applications.

Social Studies/Études Sociales 30-1 (5 credits)

Recommended Prerequisite: 60% in Social Studies 20-1 or 75% in Social 30-2

Recommended French Prerequisite: 60% in Études Sociales 20-1 and FLA 30

Social Studies 30-1 builds on 20-1 skills, focusing on developing students’ understanding of Canadian and global political, economic, and social systems at a sophisticated, academic level. The course emphasizes critical thinking, analysis, and evaluation of historical and contemporary issues, preparing students for post-secondary education and informed citizenship.  Social Studies 30-1 emphasizes academic analysis, critical thinking, and post-secondary readiness. As this is a diploma course, students will write a diploma exam worth 30% of their final grade.

Social Studies/Études Sociales 30-2 (5 credits)

Prerequisite:  50% in Social Studies 20-2 or 40% in Social 20-1

French Prerequisite: 50% in Études Sociales 20-2 or 40% in Études Sociales 20-1 and FLA 30

Social Studies 30-2 builds on 20-2 skills, focusing on practical understanding of political, economic, and social systems, and applying this knowledge to everyday life, workplace scenarios, and community participation. The course emphasizes problem-solving, decision-making, and responsible citizenship through real-world applications. Social Studies 30-2 emphasizes practical citizenship, real-world application, and everyday decision-making. Not all post-secondary programs will accept Social Studies 30-2 for admission. 

As this is a diploma course, students will write a diploma exam worth 30% of their final grade.
